Snowboarding - Lake Louise

In 1883 a railway station was built and then a trail cut through the valley and soon thereafter tourists began arriving. Skoki Ski Lodge was built in 1930 on the east side of the village and later development began on what is now a huge ski area on the west side of the valley.

In 1890 accommodation was built on the lakes shore. Eventually this burned down and a larger chalet was built and added onto until 1928 when the first two wings of today's Chateau Lake Louise were built.

The Chateau Lake Louise became complete when a third wing and major convention facilities were added. The third wing was built following the original plans, including the copper roof, and the facility now has 515 rooms. In 1992 a 150-bed hostel was built and includes a cafeteria style café.

There are also 2 campgrounds with 409 sites including 60 with electricity that are open all year.

Lake LouiseLake Louise boasts one of the largest ski areas in Canada. There are 50 runs, 1 gondola, 3 quads, 1-6 person chair, 2 triple chairlifts, one T-bar and the poma and 3 day lodges. There are also many cross-country ski trails for all skill levels.

In the summer there are miles of hiking trails that take you to lookouts and a teahouse. East of Lake Louise Village you can take the gondola to a restaurant, trails and spectacular views.

All of this is because of a setting called the "Mona Lisa of the Mountains". A spectacular amphitheatre of mountain peaks is reflected in the usually calm waters of Lake Louise. The Lake's colour changes between aquamarine and emerald green. The crown of this natural beauty is the 3464m (11365 ft.) Mt Victoria and the Victoria Glacier.
